Curtain Drapes
I need to choose curtains/drapes for a 58 x 90 window with blinds already in them?

Are there any basic guidelines for something like this? I have never covered a window before. I would like something simple with no valance. I want to let in some light, but with something more than sheers. Also, what size panels would I need for this window? Thanks very much.

Ohhh. I have done this in most of my apartments since they already had blinds installed. It looks best when you hang the rod outside of the window – if it is inset. Hang it above the window… anywhere between right above the window or up to the ceiling, depending on personal preference. Hanging curtains up to the ceiling makes the ceiling and windows look taller. Also the rod length should be wider than the window – again personal preference. Some windows I hang it right outside of the window border and then install a metal tie-back on one or both sides for when I want more light or to open the window. You can also hang the rods a foot or so outside of the window so that you can push the curtains all the way open and get maximum light and air flow. I usually do this on wider windows and the tie-back on narrow windows. Your window is pretty wide. I think it would look best with 2 panels that you can pull open/shut. Also, depending on personal preference you can hang your curtains as long as you want – to the bottom or right below the window, to the floor, or excess material draped on the floor. Hanging to floor length is definitely more modern. Check out this blog – they hung ceiling-to-floor curtains over roman shades: http://www.thisyounghouse.com/2009/04/easy-breezy-beautiful/

Ikea is a very good place to buy long curtains that allow you to do this at any length. Check out their website ikea.com or in-store if you have one. Their curtains come with hemming material, so you can sew or iron your curtains to the proper length – or take them to a tailor if you’re not good with that. Personally, I leave mine super long and just let the extra hang – i bunch it up nicely on the floor :)

I always buy adjustable rods and longer than needed curtains so I can bring them home, look at my options, and then hang at the length and width that look most appealing. Once you hang your rod, you can always take the curtains down to hem them.

As far as letting light in – it is best to look at the curtains and their material in person as opposed to online. You can judge by the material how much light will be let through. Pictures online can be deceiving.
