drapes/curtains?
Where can I find nice looking, inexpensive draperies, 84″ in length and preferably a Chocolate Brown and blue color scheme? Or have an easy way to make drapes?
Christopher Lowell has a line at Burlington coat factory that suits your bill and is inexpensive. However, there are other choices at both Bed Bath and Beyond and Linen’s N’ Things. Of course, making window treatments is super easy, even if you are inept at sewing like I am because it is really straight line sewing. Let’s face it, the rod, fabric and embellishments is what is eye appealing about draperies anyway. To make them yourself, purchase your rods before starting to sew. This will give you an idea about how big to make the Rod Pocket (the seam at the top through which the rod holds the drape). If you like a tight pucker at the top, leave 1-11/2 inch of fabric above the rod. Fold over the material to leave enough for the pucker and for the rod pocket. (Say about 4 inches) Straight line sew two seams 1-11/2 inches down from the fold for the first and 2 inches below that for the second. Then you have 4 more seams at each side to straight line sew to hem the sides. I like to make them rather small and only allow 1/2 inch seam allowances. However, I like rather large seams at the bottoms and usually allow 4 inches at the bottom hem. But, I pool the bottoms of my draperies so I usually have at least 12-14 inches of fabric longer than necessary. I cover my hems and sew lines with embellishments (just in case they weren’t so straight). I use mop fringe, sometimes lace, sometimes gimp, sometimes ribbbon, etc. This can be glued with a washable and dry cleanable glue like Aileen’s or you can sew that on too. The key is to color coordinate your threads to Your Fabric and then to your embellishments.
