Cheap alternative to replace crappy plastic blinds?
I live in an apartment. There is a huge window facing the street.
Everytime I try and open the sliding glass door those vertical plastic blinds snap and break off. So was looking for an alternative to put something in its place. Little hardware and wondering if I could somehow use that big metal bracket for the blinds that is there now to hang something without having to dismount everything? Should I buy panels of drapes from somewhere cheap? Would like to split cost with roommates.
The thing with verticals is the vanes, or Slats, need to be perpendicular to the window so they easily slide back and out of the way, it is just a matter of getting a habit to tilt them first, draw them away from the door opening, and they won’t break..They should also be pulled back when the door remains open because the wind will snap them all over the place.
If you get a nice metal pole and a drape with a pocket, they will slide easily over the metal. The center will need a support to avoid sag. Use the hardware that comes with it. It sets differently than a vertical, because the brackets are at the extreme ends, and the exact middle, so that the drape will slide. Most handymen or Handy women are good at installing the rods, it’s a cinch with the right tools and driver bits.
You will still have the issue of moving the drape when the door is being opened. There are cords and small hardware packs to hold them back available at most home stores, and you can be innovative at a fabric store, have fun!!. Or at our house we use a chair to flop them over and leave the door open for the dogs!
