Rider Waite Tarot

Origin of the Tarot

To find the origin of the Tarot there are different stories and theory about it and so it is very difficult to say where it exactly is. Even though it is for sure that around the 14th century the tarotcards appeard for the first time in Europe. Through the years, the centuries, in different countries, different visions and ideas the cards were developing more and more until the cards were created to a deck around 1760 that we until the present still know. In the Netherlands we see the first tarotcards and differente kind of decks around 1370 . In 1910 comes the publication of the well known Rider Waite Tarot by Arthur Edward Wait, 1857-1942, with very beautifull designed illustrations of Pamela Colan Smith, 1878-1951. Unfortunalitly her name we don’t hear that much when we speak about the Rider Waite Tarot, but forever and more her initials are always seen on the cards, on the bottom, a P with written across a C and a S. A “stigma”  that will make us always remember her.

What is Tarot?

In our dictionary Van Dale the word Tarot is explained as;
1 [occ.] old cardgame with 78 cards, that is used to foretell the future and to get insight in situations.

The Tarot is a cardgame! It consist 78 cards, divided in the Major and Small Arcana. It’s a psychological method, a game that can provide help to get insight in our daily life. Like the Van Dale is saying that the Tarot can foretell the future I have to say that I don’t agree. If in that our future is already ascertained … I don’t know. This can be a long story and discussion, but for sure is that the Tarotgame can, like I said before, give you insight in our daily life, in daily situations. It could help you to make decisions in a better way, give a more clearer insight in yourself and more, so that afterwards u stand better in life, which makes you feel better and makes you be more able to handle situations or happenings better.  How the future will go is and will always be in our hands there we make the decisions in our life. What I always say to people is that they have keep in mind that a) the Tarot does not foretell the future and b) what the tarotcards in a reading is telling does not mean that it really has to be this way. The cards in a reading gives you a directive in a situation and gives you an insight in the possbilities how a situation can be handled or resolved but I repeat the responsibility for the decision what to do with the conclusion of a reading, is always in the hands of the person who asked the question! For those whom they occupy themselves with the cards must also always remember that the Tarot must not become THE guide-book in life. It is and it will always be a game that can !!! provide some help!

Division of the Cards

The Tarotcards consist 78 cards;

  • the Major Arcana – 22 cards
  • the Small Arcana – 56 cards
