Statute of Limitations on a debt collection for Verizon home telephone service.?
I received a letter of collection two days ago from a debt collection agency who purchased my account from Verizon for home telephone service. I was told by the company, and yes, I understand they’ll say anything, that there is no SOL for this type of service. It is for service that I had disconnected in Oct. 97. Can they still attempt to collect on this debt?
The Statute of Limitations (SOL) on collection of the debt varies from state to state. Pay attention to the limitation based on a written contract. See the link, below, to look your state up among the United States.
You didn’t mention the collection agency (CA), but one that has been working old Verizon accounts in an allegedly overaggressive, reckless manner is AFNI. If this is the CA that has contacted you, you have plenty of company.
Do not contact this company or any CA by phone. Best is to go to a specialized credit message board site like the two, following, and search on your CA and original creditor, Verizon. You’ll learn how to approach the situation and legally reply with maximum effect.
