How hard/how much is adding a 2nd 220 line?
I’m buying a house that has an electric stove on a 220 line, and a gas dryer. I already own an electric dryer, and would rather not have to buy a new dryer. How hard is it, or how much would it cost, to add a 2nd 220 line? The panel is less than 6 feet away from where the dryer would be, but I think the inspector said there were no available breakers (if that makes a difference)….
As you know, you definitely need 240V. If you could just add another circuit, you could probably get it done for a few hundred dollars. However, if there are truly no available breakers, it would be cheaper to buy another dryer, as you’d be looking at a panel (and maybe a service) upgrade. This is because if all of the breaker positions are filled, there is no place to put in a new 240V breaker. In order to add another circuit, an electrician would either have to upgrade the existing panel, or add a sub panel. Neither option is inexpensive, and would probably run from $1000-$2000+ depending on how much work was involved. If adding a 30A circuit put you over the edge on your incoming service which would necessitate a larger service, that would be even more money.
Personally, when I had to replace my gas dryer recently, I found a local guy who sells used appliances. I bought a dryer for $140, and it works fine. There’s nothing magical about a dryer, so I didn’t see any sense in paying $400 for a new one.
Don’t forget, now that it’s warm out, you could always use a solar-powered clothes dryer, and they work for almost nothing.
