What cars are reliable starter cars?

I am looking to buy a newer car, my 93′ Dynasty is acquiring a lot of miles, 190K to be exact. So Im getting a little jittery and am looking to get a car at least in the 2000-2008 range.

I am open to all makes and models, but what im really asking for is a list of cars within the last 8 years that are cheap, reliable, and not a luxury vehicle by any means.

My current budget is 2500$ but hopefully by June my budget will rise to at least 4000$ to 6000$.

1. WIth the higher budget range, look into the Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic – they’re reliable, economy-minded cars and the maintenance/repairs are not as labor-intensive as the family-car Camry or Accord.
2. The Ford Escort has come a long way since the Escort of the 80′s and makes a good second choice in my mind.
3. The Chevrolet Cavalier has been a sturdy choice for years with its uncomplicated design.

Hyundai has also come a very long way, but I have my doubts about their longevity – I have no issue with the critical components (engine, transmission, etc), but we commonly see small broken parts such as door handles and heater switches. If you’re planning on another 190k car I would hedge my bets and go with something else.
Mazda parts are usually more expensive.

As with any used car, have a proper buyer’s inspection performed on it. People sell their cars for a reason, and you want to avoid picking up someone else’s problem child. Be aware that many vehicles require a significant maintenance service at regular intervals (usually 60k, 90k, or 100k) and that owners may skip these services if they are planning to sell the car.
