Why is my red finned albino shark picking on my goldfish?
The shark is smaller than the goldfish, and one in a tank full of 20 other fish, at least half of those being smaller than the shark. So how can the goldfish be scared of it? I haven’t noticed any damage caused by nipping, but the shark chases the goldfish around then either stops when it comes close, or nips at the back fins of the goldfish.. This always during feeding time. This is in a 40 gallon tank filled with all tropical fish, except, of course, for the goldfish. It’s not a usual comet goldfish, It is bright white and orange. I think the name starts with “S”.
Goldfish and tropical fish should NEVER be mixed together..
Goldfish are coldwater fish..they thrive in water at room temperature. goldfish tanks do not need a heater.
60-68 degrees is ideal.
Most tropical fish (like neons) need much warmer water, like 75-80 degrees. tropical tanks always need a heater.
yes, in theory, goldfish *can* survive at warmer temps, and tropicals *can* survive at lower temps..but they arent happy with it..it stresses them a lot, will make them ill, and will shorten their lifespan.
so some people say “well..why not average the temps and keep both goldfish and tropicals in the same tank at say..70 degrees?”
because now ALL your fish are stressed!
the goldfish are forced to live in water that is uncomfortably warm for them, and the tropicals are forced to live in water that is uncomforable cold for them.
none of the fish are happy, they will all be stressed and die young.
If we are going to keep ANY pets, even 10-cent feeder goldfish, it is our duty and obligation to give them the absolute best living conditions we can! If we know goldfish do best with water around 65 degrees, and tropicals do best at 78, then not giving them both that ideal temp is just cruel and irresponsible. that is harming them on purpose.
thats just mean..
never keep goldfish and tropicals in the same tank..
they are not adapted to the same conditions.
