Why is my painted water turtle showing aggression towards my red-eared sliders?
I have three turtles, 2 of which are red-eared sliders and the other is a painted turtle. I’ve had them for 2 years when they were babies. They live in a 10 gallon tank supplied with all turtle necessities. Recently the painted turtle has been nipping at the other turtle’s neck. Why is it like this all of a sudden and what should I do?
It’s way too crowded. Three aquatic turtles for ten gallons? Absolutely not. The rule of aquatic turtles living in tanks: Ten gallons of water for every inch of turtle. One red eared slider means 12 inches long which means a 120-150 gallon aquarium. Two would be 250 and three would approximately be about 300-350 gallon tank.
Or separate the three.
Honestly, most aquatic turtles aren’t aggressive or territorial. If they’re mixed genders, this could also be part of the cause. I never suggest male and female housing for aquatic turtles. You’ll never stop having to separate the female and keeping her out of the water because males generally bite at the female’s back feet. But biting the neck is aggression.
Aggression could be caused by the cramped housing situation. Turtles have been known to kill another turtle if it’s too cramped. They fight until death, the winner gets more room.
Usually, you can house aquatic turtles and mix species, just make sure that there’s enough room and enough food.
If the aggression doesn’t stop, I suggest putting it in its own tank or getting rid of it if you have no tank space.
