Silk Curtains
Should heavy fringe be glued or sewn onto finished silk draperies? What type glue is best? Thanx?

The curtains are a multi colored, plaid silk, which are lined and inner-lined. The fringe is a medium weight. The drapes get quite a bit of direct sun, so I am concerned that heat might adversely impact glue. The fringe will run from top to the bottom, along the outer edge. I was told that machine sewing the fringe could cause the edges to bunch up and become crooked. I’m not much of a seamtress, but would give hand sewing a shot if that is better than gluing. The curtains were expensive and I don’t want to screw them up. However, if I can get away with hot glue or fabric glue, ye doggies, that would be sweet. Thanks for the info.

Glue can’t be depended on in the long run, especially exposed to sun, and the tugging/moving of opening and closing the curtains would hasten the demise of the bond.

I’ve been sewing for 20+ years and have only found one good way to apply fringe to any object, and that is to hand sew it on. You should do just fine with sewing it. Get a color thread that matches the curtains and fringe and sew stitches about 1/8th inch long each. It’ll take awhile, but you’ll feel good about it when it’s done. I do my hand sewing while on the couch watching TV and the time goes by faster.
