Tailoring clothes myself? Any good books, websites?
For Christmas I was given a sewing machine, which I wanted very badly. But now I’m learning to use it (very slowly) it’s a lot harder than I thought. But anyways I would like to learn how to tailor my clothes and eventually make bedding, curtains, pillows just about anything you can think of. Does anyone have any good tips or can you recommend any good resources I can use to help me. Thanks.
As far a tailoring my own clothes goes is it even possible, or would it just be better to get it professionally done?
Yes, I am interested in tailoring store bought clothes to fit better.
Hi Amber,
I’m at the other end of the spectrum from Susan; I’ve only been sewing for about a year. I agree with her that you should begin with easy projects, but each time you should challenge yourself. I began by making pinch-pleat draperies for one bedroom. I used the old Singer Sewing Book for directions. At first I was baffled, and then as I worked through it, began having “AHA – that’s what they mean!” moments. I wound up making draperies for several rooms in the house. Making all those long seams, I got comfortable with the machine, and more accurate. Draperies are a great project, because you sew a lot. I blind-stitched miles of hem, and now have that under my belt.
Make pajamas, bathrobe, a coat for your dog, etc. – items that won’t appear in public but will be useful while you hone your skills. The key is to start with projects that aren’t important, so you can build your confidence. With each new project take on a new challenge – buttonholes, elastic waistband, bound pockets, etc. Try to make some projects with patterns you make yourself – this will free you from being a slave to a pattern, and will help you learn to use it only as a guide. I took a couple of classes, but didn’t find them very useful; the time got used up on other things besides learning. The ideal situation is to get one-on-one help. There are many retired women around who were great seamstresses, and would be flattered to be asked for help. It’s like riding a bike – they might not have done it for 40 years, but it all comes back. You may even find someone who is skilled in making alterations, and make a new buddy in the process.
Your question caught my eye because I’m interested in tailoring too. Start by making a simple jacket from a pattern to get the feel of it. Modify the design according to your taste. There are a few books out there on tailoring – the one from the Singer series has pretty good reviews.
