Shouldn’t I get compensated for a valance that was ruined by my dry cleaners.?
I dropped off a valance with tassels on the ends to get “spot cleaned” at the drycleaners and the girl there told me if they couldn’t do it they will just return it. Needless to say she was wrong and the drycleaner ruined the valance all but 5 tassels are gone. The valance was only 1-1/2 yrs old and now. They didn’t charge me, but they refused to offer me any compensation for it. Now I have to go out and buy a new valance. I would like to know if they are responsible for the damage.
Unfortunately you would have to file the claim in small claims court, and pay any filing fees up front. Plus, you would have to have time to appear in court to present your claim.
If the item is washable, you are better off hand washing this type of thing yourself. Even items that say dry clean only may not be safe for dry cleaning. Some manufacturers use the dry clean only label to make the item seem a better quality than it really is. Also, any trim may not stand up to dry cleaning solvents as well as the main fabric. You can use Woolite and water safely on most items that say dry clean only. You just have to lay them flat to dry.
Finding a reliable and reputable dry cleaners in not easy. At the end of one season I took in a couple of sweaters to be dry cleaned. All seemed fine until I got them out the next winter. The knit had been caught in some machinery, and pulled and ripped, but the dry cleaner had carefully folded and hung the item so none of the damage would show.
